statement

The roots of my artistic activity are not only found in the properties of photography, my specialist field, but also originate from my daily life, my social status, and memories from my childhood.

My work is also, in a large part, deeply related to communication with others.
Recent work develops this theme by using materials from everyday situations, such as dining tables, books, and cell-phones which allow the viewer to form associations with their own memories and daily lives.
Another essential element is the construction of stories within the installations. In order to do this, I often use my own personal belongings, household goods, and stories from my everyday life.
This process is not simply a reenactment, but is a means of constructing new stories or rather, it is the act of playing a game of ‘make-believe’, an experience that everyone can relate to from their own childhood.

I hope that through the tracing of my own memories and daily experiences, I can explore and bring awareness to person-to-person relationships . I feel that our daily lives and our family relationships are a reflection of our world, and that even the trivial things of our daily lives have an importance.

わたしたちの日常的な生活について考える。または、それによって知らない誰かと何かしらの形で関係すること。
それらについて拭いきれず、日々湧き上がってくる閃きと確信こそ、制作のテーマと目的のような気がしています。
作品を発表するだけでなく活動を通して、私自身を含めた社会へ認知の方法を探っています。
表現メディアには、文章、写真、映像、インスタレーション、ドローイングなどを使用しています。

Using actual furniture from his family home, the artist has created a small room on-site. While also being a memory of its creator, this anonymous living environment communicates a modest message from the artist to its visitors.


実際に家族と使っていた家具を用いて、会場に小さな部屋を作り出します。作者の記憶であると同時に、誰の生活空間でもないそこには、作者から来訪者へのささやかなメッセージが置かれているのかもしれません。

　(Un)familiar Room展は内村茂太、小泉伸司、増田和弘の3名によるグループ展です。　本展は、内村の自身の日常を記録した日記映画、小泉による不穏な映像作品、そして増田による廃墟化したアトリエを模したインスタレーションで構成されています。
　また、墨田区にある短期賃貸(ウィークリー／マンスリー)マンションの一室を会場とし、出品作家のひとりである小泉が約一年前に滞在した体験をひとつのきっかけとして[Studio Apartment Center]によって企画された展覧会です。

　会場となる短期賃貸マンションは、自宅での生活と同じように最低限の居心地の良さが提供される場所ではあるものの、普段の生活とは異なる防犯管理システムや無個性なインテリアなど、どこか居心地の悪さを醸し出す場所でもあります。出品者である3名のアーティストもとりあえず共同生活に等しい形でその部屋の滞在者となります。しかし一定のプロセスを経てから訪問することになる鑑賞者は、奇妙な形で3名のアーティストに出会うことになります。本体と言うべきものはそこにはなく、場と作家達によって形作られた幽霊的な場に立ち会うことになるのです。

　増田の作品は会場の空間を無視するようなサイズの小屋です。そして、作品制作中に居心地の悪さを感じた出品作家がふらっと出掛けていってしまったような光景がその内部に残されています。増田が何に退屈し、居心地の悪さを感じて出ていってしまったのか。作品に付されたタイトルと小屋の中に置かれたテキストがそのヒントになるのかもしれません。この展覧会場の部屋番号を聞くために訪問者によってかけられる携帯電話の着信は、その意味を促そうとする、或いは出掛け先での退屈しのぎの、増田からのささやかなメッセージのようでもあります。

　展覧会タイトル「(Un)familiar Room」は住まう者にとって、その場所が「familiar(居心地の良い)」にも、「unfamiliar(居心地の悪い)」にもなりうることを意味しています。ほんの些細なきっかけで既成の価値観が反転しうるということ。勿論それは単に居住性の問題だけではなく、 「Room」が「System」「Body」「Life」などに置き換え可能なものとして捕捉されています。
